About Me

Blake Brewer, Bankruptcy Attorney

Blake Brewer

Practice Focus

I have had a license to practice law in the State of Ohio for more than 30 years. From my office in Independence, Ohio, I have filed thousands of Ohio bankruptcy petitions on behalf of consumers in Lake, Summit, Medina, Cuyahoga, Lorain and Geauga counties. I also help consumers defend collections lawsuits, provide student loan debt resolution assistance and represent consumers against debt collectors in collection harassment cases.

My philosophy is based upon the belief that consumers who are overwhelmed by debt are not “at fault;” rather, the core problem stems from situations far beyond their control, such as job loss, uninsured health care costs, student loan debt, divorce and the death or disability of a family member or loved one.

Background

I graduated from the Ohio State University (dual degree in English and journalism) and the Cleveland Marshall College of Law at Cleveland State University, where I was President of the Student Bar Association and an editor of the Cleveland State Law Review. I received the American Jurisprudence award for excellence in the study of criminal law, and have been licensed to practice law in Ohio since 1984.

In 1998, I opened the Cleveland office of a Columbus based law firm, Koffel & Jump, then opened my own practice in the same location in April of 2000. I am a member of the National Association of Consumer Bankruptcy Attorneys, the National Association of Consumer Advocates, and the Cleveland & Parma bar associations.

My work for consumers with financial distress has been the subject of interviews with the Associated Press, WCPN radio, the Cleveland Plain Dealer, the Wall Street Journal and other media outlets.

I served as the elected Mayor of Harveysburg, Ohio, from 1992-1996, the magistrate for Waynesville, Ohio’s mayor’s court from 1993-1996, and was formerly an assistant Montgomery County public defender and Senior Product Analyst for LEXIS-NEXIS in Dayton, Ohio. From 1996-1998, I was associated with nationally known law firm of Allen, Guthrie & McHugh in Charleston, West Virginia.

I have been a frequent lecturer at continuing legal education seminars in Columbus and Cleveland on civil and criminal matters.
